The A1 license: your gateway to the motorcycle world
The A1 license is the first category of the Swiss motorcycle license. It comes in two variants: A1 50cc from age 15, and A1 125cc from age 16. It is the first step to freedom on two wheels.

This first variant of the A1 license allows riding mopeds up to 50cc, with a maximum power of 4 kW and a speed limit of 45 km/h.
It is often the first motorized driving experience for young Swiss. Training is shorter and vehicles are lighter, enabling safe learning.

The second variant of A1 allows riding motorcycles and scooters up to 125cc engine size, with a maximum power of 11 kW.
With this license, you can ride on the highway (limited to 80 km/h on regular roads and 120 km/h on highways depending on the vehicle), offering much greater versatility for daily commuting.
A1 theory exam
Whichever A1 variant you choose, you must pass the motorcycle theory exam. It includes 50 questions over 45 minutes, with a pass rate of 75%. Content covers the highway code, road signs, priorities and motorcycle-specific aspects.
A1 practical training
Practical training includes a minimum of 12 hours: 8 hours of road riding and 4 hours on a training ground. It is provided by an approved driving school and prepares you for the final practical exam.
